Lesson plan

The Tesla Coil is an experiment that can be used to demonstrate and examine many basic principles such as voltages, currents, capacitors, magnetic and electric fields, charge storage, Faragay's Law and so on. It is recommended for Physics 11 and above.
As a suggested lesson, I have created a powerpoint and a worksheet to go with it that introduce students to all of the basic principles listed above and more. Learning what goes into making a Tesla Coil and how it operates is the way I chose to explore these. The worksheet linked at the bottom is a step by step guide to the physics, calculations and assumptions that went into my construction of the coil. The students can complete the basic calculations and leave the hour lecture with all the infromation and parameters they need to build their own Tesla Coil! The BUILD YOUR OWN section of this page goes through each part of the coil, how it was built and what electromagnetic ideas it demonstrates.
